The Memorial was moved to its present location in Clarens when many rural memorials were relocated to increase their visibility.
Significance
During escalating territorial conflict between the Basotho and the Boer Republics, a Transvaal commando was sent to clear the Basotho from the highlands. On 29 September 1865, 5 burghers were killed in a Basotho surprise pre dawn attack on this commando near present day Clarens. A counter attack drove the Basotho back through Naauwpoort Nek. The fallen burghers were buried on the battlefield.
