South African Military History Society

MAY 1968 NEWSLETTER

NEWSLETTER NO. 7.

3 Jun 1968.

1. SECRETARY:

It is with extreme regret that I have to announce that Mr. Neville Gomm, our Secretary, has left us on transfer to Bloemfontein. His last official duties were at the May meeting. Neville was the founder of this Society and its extremely hardworking Secretary and although we shall miss him, we must wish him everything of the best in his transfer and we know that a Bloemfontein Branch will flourish! Well done Neville and we hope that one day you may return to Johannesburg, so it's not good-bye but only au revoir.

2. Having no Secretary is the reason why I am endeavouring to get out some sort of notice.

3. Mr. P. Rice was elected (unanimously but rather bullied!!) to the vacant seat on the Committee caused by Neville Gomm's departure and we shall endeavour to find a new Secretary from the ranks of the Committee.

4. NEXT MEETING:

Venue:     S.A. War Museum, Johannesburg.
Date:       Thursday 13th. June, 1968.
(do bring along a friend or friends and this may help to swell our ranks.)
Time:       8.00 p.m. (2000 hrs. to the army types!)
Subject:   "History of Bantu Tribal Warfare during the 19th Century, with special reference to strategy".
By:          Dr. P. Becker

DONATIONS

A couple of months ago I sent out an appeal to all our members for donations to help us register our Society's badge, the cost of which will be R143-00. Our young society just hasn't got this amount of money to spare.

We have received the large amount of R74-00, which is half the target, and we are very grateful to those members who have contributed this amount,

BUT
ONLY 15 (FIFTEEN) MEMBERS CONTRIBUTED THIS AMOUNT

This means only 10% and also means an average of R5 per person.

May I please make a further appeal to those who have not yet responded. If the balance ALL make a small donation of ONLY ONE RAND each, then our bank-balance will really be healthy even after we have paid for the registration.

6. COMMITTEE MEETING

A Committee Meeting will be held at 7.15 p.m., just prior to the next meeting, in Commandant Duxbury's office - same date as above meeting.
